before treatment

Avoid the sun 2 - 4 weeks before and after treatment. Patients should discontinue use of any topical medications (retin-A) or other skin care products 3 - 5 days prior to treatment. If you have a history of perioral herpes simplex virus, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. Also, your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, oils, topical anesthetics, or self-tanning products before treatment. RECENTLY TANNED SKIN SHOULD NOT BE TREATED! Treatment within 2 weeks of active tanning (natural sunlight or tanning booth) may result in hypopigmentation which may not clear for several months.

during the procedure

Treatment takes place in our comfortable setting. Skin must be "squeaky clean!" proper to treatment, and you will wear protective eye wear to protect you from the laser's light. Also, when treating the upper lip, your teeth will be protected by placing white moist gauze between your lip and gums, also serving as support for your lip. Our practitioner will use a small handpiece to guide the laser, and each laser pulse may be preceded/followed with a short pulse for cooling spray. Your treatment may take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area and condition being treated.

after treatment

Immediately after treatment, there is often mild redness and mild swelling in the treatment areas, which may last up to 2 hour or more. The redness may last 2 - 3 days. Some patients report the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours, whereas others note that their skin feels pleasantly warm . We provide an optional cooling method after treatment to ensure your comfort. It is important to avoid sun exposure, picking, or scratching the treated skin, and scrubbing or rinsing with abrasive skin cleansers. Use sun block SPF 30+ at all times throughout the course of treatment. Lastly, there are no restrictions on bathing besides treating your skin gently, and you can call our office with any questions or concerns.
